A and An are articles.
They mean the same ('un', 'una' in Spanish).
- We use an with:
words that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) sound
EXAMPLES:
apple ๐ an apple
eraser ๐ an eraser
iguana ๐ an iguana
orange ๐ an orange
umbrella* ๐ an umbrella
hour ๐ an hour**
*Exception: when 'u' causes a /ju/ sound, as in 'unicorn'. In that case, we use 'a':
unicorn (pronounced /juหnikษหrn/) ๐ a unicorn
** The 'h' in 'hour' is silent.
- We use a with:
words that start with a consonant sound
(b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z)
