Using 'A' and 'An'

A and An are articles. They mean the same ('un', 'una' in Spanish). We use an with: words that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) sound EXAMPLES: a pple 👉 a n apple e raser 👉 a n eraser i guana 👉 a n iguana o range 👉 a n orange u mbrella* 👉 an umbrella h our 👉 a n hour** *Exception: when 'u' causes a /ju/ sound, as in ' unicorn '. In that case, we use 'a': unicorn (pronounced / juːnikɔː r n /) 👉 a unicorn ** The ' h ' in ' hour ' is silent.
